Review: Gŵyl Gobaith 2011
On Friday 26th August 2011 I along with another member of the Young Flintshire Editorial Group attended the Gŵyl Gobaith Music Festival 2011 in Northop. The festival was organised to promote music within Flintshire’s community and to raise money for charities over three nights. One of this year's charities was the Welsh Air Ambulance who are celebrating their tenth anniversary.
We arrived at Northop College for six o'clock where we located the gates after a lot of confusion of where to go. We did not realise that the festival was outside as we forgot our picnic and deck chairs. We met Gwenno at seven for our VIP passes. We were both nervous as we did not know what to expect as we'd never been to a classical music festival before.
The time came to take the backstage tour and meet the artists. First, we heard a local artist from Buckley called John Parry. My nerves calmed down after hearing him sing the greatest acoustic version of Ellie Goulding's Starry Eyed, some Amy Winehouse and even a great classic from John Lennon. We then met Rhys Meirion the event's Chair and Artistic Director who we interviewed; to think that Rhys used to be a head teacher at a primary school before taking up an operatic career!
Next on stage was Lucy, her performance was great especially as she was only thirteen years of age. She was great to interview as she had a really bubbly personality.
Then we met Mike Doyle, a folk singer and comedian. After we interviewed Mike we went to watch him on stage where he told great jokes and sung Tom Jones and even got us swaying to a Beatles classic
We watched other artists like Elysium III who are featuring on Rhydian's new album and even appearing on his new show. Then the time came, after a few more appearances from Rhys Meirion and other artists, for Rhydian to do an hour show. It was great performance and it was unbelievable that backstage we stood only a few feet from him.
Late on after the show when we were all cold it was time for the Welsh national anthem. I'm not sure whether it was because we were all cold but we all had goose bumps during it!
