QR Barcodes: What Are They?
Quick response barcodes are more commonly known as QR barcodes and were invented in 1994 for the automotive industry due to their fast readability and large storage capacity.
These codes consist of black dots made into a square pattern on a white background and were created by Toyota to track vehicles along the assembly line.
The codes were designed to be scanned at high speed to show where that vehicle was at a particular stage. The United Kingdom is now the seventh largest national consumer of QR barcodes.
As of 2011 QR barcodes are becoming more commonly used throughout many aspects of services and industries. These can include entertainment, transport and even sales and marketing.
Due to technology advancing they are targeting mobile phones. These barcodes allow you to take pictures and receive the websites or URL addresses to your phone.
But does this mean every mobile phone should have an app to scan a QR barcode? Would they be more common for leisure services and clubs or even groups, and are we going to see them in more magazines and on the telly, or even on billboards or outside of shops?
The first time I ever saw one was when I looked on Facebook and saw a local crane hire firm had posted one as their facebook profile picture. I wondered what it was and tried to understand more.
I then downloaded an application that reads QR barcodes and took a picture of the barcode which was scanned via my application. Strangely I was taken to the website of the local crane hire firm. I now realise how technology has moved on and how advertising has been brought to 2011.
Viruses can be found when opening bad QR barcodes and this can affect your PC or phone. Is it worth opening a bar code to recieve a virus? The answer is no!
So are these bar codes worth the hassle or are they the way forward? As young people what makes us want to scan them and would we use them?
As young people the question I ask you is: what you think of QR barcodes?

I think they are a great new technology. I've been using them to list stuff on ebay with my iPhone - sooo much quicker than doing it from scratch on a PC. Didn't know you could get viruses from QR codes though!

I'm waiting to see pictures of people with these as tattoos. If they link to their Facebook profile it won't be long until the four horses.

There's something quite 8-bit about them. That's a good thing.
